"All's Fair in Love and War" But Whose Really Playing Who?
In "Shrew" all the suitors dress up as someone else to get close to Bianca.In "How to Lose A Guy In Ten Days" Benjamin Barry makes a deal with his competitors that if he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days then he gets the account. Andie Anderson is writing a story on how to lose a guy in 10 days as a bet with her boss to be able to write more interesting stories. In both the book and the movie none of the people are being up front about their intentions. They were all playing games and in the end the truth comes out.

In the quotes above Tranio and Lucentio make the plan for Lucentio to dress up as a school master so he can get close to Bianca. Tranio dresses up as Lucentio so that no one will wonder where he is and so tha he can make the arangements with Biancas father for Lucentio to marry her.
In this scene Andie is in a meeting with her boss discussing what her next article will be. Her friend Michelle was jus dumped and her boss Lana wants to write a story about it. Andie: Look at Michelle. She is a great girl, right? An amazing woman. But she has a problem hanging on to relationships and doesn't really know what she's doing wrong, which is like a lot of our readers. So, I was thinking, that I could start by dating a guy, and then drive him away. But only using the classic mistakes most women, Like Michelle, make all the time. I'll keep a diary of it and it will be sort of a dating "How To" in reverse. Lana: What not to do. Andie: Yeah. Lana: "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days". Yes. Go.
In this scene Ben and his colleges are making a bet. If Ban can make any girl that they pick out fall in love with him then he can pitch the diamond idea to the Delours. Spears: I'm not talking about lust. A woman in lust wants chocolate. A woman in love wants diamonds. Ben: Yeah, I'm not talking about lust either, ladies. I'm talking about deep, meaningful, head-over-heels, his-n-hers towels, let's-grow-old-together L-O-V-E. Look, I love women. I do. Whether they're 4, 40 or my 88-year-old grandmother, I respect women. Alright? And I also listen to women. And that's why I can sell myself to any woman, anywhere, any time. Just like in the book these characters are plotting and deceiving to get what they want. Hortensio- Mistake no more: I am not Licio, Nor a musician, as I seem to be; But one that scorn to live in this disguise, For such a one as leaves a gentleman, And makes a god of such a cullion: Know, sir, that I am call'd Hortensio. (Act 4 Sc. 2 155)
In this quote Hortensio tells Tranio who he really is. Because Tranio showed him Bianca and Lucentio kissing. Hortensio revokes his love of Bianca and goes to marry a widow that he knows.
At the end of the movie Bens best friends tell Andie about the bet by accident because they were tricked by there sneaky co-workers. And Lana's boss tells Ben about the "How To" article Andie has been writing. Secrets are all out!
In this picture Andie and Ben leave the party arugeing looks like the gig is up. When the truth comes out who is really hurt? The one who won? Or the one who lost? They both lost each other.
Ben: You wanted to loose a guy in 10 days, well there you go…you lost him
Andie: No..you’re wrong. Because you cant loose something you never had
In the very end of the movie Andie is leaving to get another job because by writing that story didn't get the benefits she wanted. Ben read the article that Andie wrote and in it she confessed her love to him. Ben chases her through the streets and all is forgiven. When Bianca finds out that Cambio is Lucentio she doesn't trust him for his lies but she is already in love with him and they get married. One big bet make her fall in love, how to get rid of him all in 10 days One big plot get close to the girl, get the father's consent, marry the girl The way everyone acted in "Shrew" they all acted like Bianca was some type of prize to be won. She had no say in the matter she could chose who she fell in love with but she couldn't chose the winner of the game the suitors and her father were playing. In "How to Lose A Man In Ten Days" Andie and Ben both had choices and they chose to pick one person to play a game with to get ahead in there jobs. there are two differences in Shakesperes world and in our world. Choices and Opportunities. We can make all the choices and we have loads of opportunities Bianca and all the other women in that day in age had to do as they we told. We may not always make the right choices due to the opportunities we are given as seen by Andie and Ben, but once we get our act together things will eventually turn out ok.
